Golden sits right at the base of the foothills, about 800 feet higher than Lakewood, and that elevation and terrain change what a garage or basement job looks like. Sloped, rocky lots are common in neighborhoods like Beverly Heights, Heritage Dells, and Eagle Ridge, where homes were built into the hillside with retaining walls doing real structural work. A garage floor on a sloped lot often takes more water at the apron from runoff than a flat-pad Lakewood garage does, which we account for in how we grade the transition at the door.
Golden's native ground tends to be rockier and better-draining than the flatter, clay-heavy soil closer to Denver, which is generally kinder to a concrete slab, less of the swelling and shrinking that drives cracking in expansive clay areas. That doesn't mean every Golden slab is crack-free, older homes near downtown and around the Colorado School of Mines campus still settle and crack like concrete anywhere else, we just don't assume the same soil-driven cracking pattern we plan for on a flatter, clay-soil lot.
